In attending the Joondalup Council meeting on June 10th, I wish to say many thanks to the members of the homeowners association, for there efforts in achieving a stop gap in the proposed store going ahead. The committee needs to be recognised for profesionally dealing with the matter in hand.It is hoped that this is the final outcome on this proposal.

17th June 2008: Update on the proposed Liquor Store in Currambine
From the Committee
The liquor store proposed for Currambine marketplace has been unanimously rejected by the CoJ councillors at the vote taken at the recent ordinary council meeting held on June 10th. The rejection was primarily based on planning grounds but took into account the overwhelming public opposition to the proposal. In all, 45 objections were received prior to the closing date of submission, with no submissions in favour. A number of residents spoke out against the proposal at the meeting and the strong show of opposition possibly swayed any councillors who were still undecided on the issue.
We would like to thank all residents who submitted their written objections and made verbal statements at the meeting, furthermore we would like to acknowledge and express our gratitude to the councillors who took the views of the community into account and did not simply accede to the technical aspects of the proposal.
Significantly the council has now proposed a review of the Currambine structure plan with the express intention of engaging the residents of surrounding suburbs in the review process.
It is however important to note that this is not necessarily the end of the matter as the developer is likely to appeal to the State Administrative Tribunal so there is still a possibility that the development could go ahead. We will post further updates on this website as they come to hand
City of Joondalup website - council meetings.

24th April 2008: Proposed Liquor Store in Currambine
From the Committee
The City of Joondalup have released for public comment a proposal to develop a Liquor Store at 1244 Marmion Avenue, Currambine (to the North of Video Easy). All comments must be recieved by 9th May 2008. The committee urge all residents to carefully consider this proposal and submit their comments to the CoJ by the due date.
For the record, the committee oppose this development as we feel that an additional liquor store, which is likely to have extended trading hours, will simply add to the issues of underage drinking and anti-social behaviour that Iluka has been experiencing over the past few years. A letter stating this position has already been forwarded to the CoJ.
Further informaiton, including updated plans are available at the City of Joondalup website.

23rd August 2007: Closure of Iluka forsehore carpark at night?
I note with interest that there is a proposal to extend the current temporary closure of the Quinns Rocks carpark, which is currently closed at night from 10pm to 6am from November to April and 8pm to 6am from May to October. The foreshore park at Iluka has been quite an antisocial place especially in the summer months with cars doing burnouts within the carpark and when exiting the carpark onto Burns Beach Rd. It will only be a matter of time before there is a major accident at the exit/entrance to the carpark. Would it be possible for the IHOA to lobby the City of Joondalup for a similar closure of the Iluka foreshore carpark?
Andre Kung

From the Committee
We have approached the City of Joondalup with regard to closing the car park in question. The response from the CoJ was rather non committal, it would appear part of the issue is the difficulty in employing someone to ensure that the car park is locked and unlocked at the appropriate times.
We suggest that any concerned residents contact the City of Joondalup directly in order to lobby for the carpark closure.

3rd March 2007: Security Update

Over the past few months the committee has had several meetings with Police and representatives from the City of Joondalup (particularly officers responsible for City Watch and Youth Workers) in an effort to address the security issues which have been a source of concern for many residents.

One thing that has become clear to us is the apparent difference in opinion between residents and the authorities regarding the seriousness of such issues. This is partly due to the fact that both Police and City Watch are able to point to call-out statistics which appear to show very few calls to either party during times which residents have described as being particularly bad for anti-social behaviour.

While we accept that the overall crime rate in Iluka is lower than many other suburbs, anecdotal evidence from residents and Youth Workers would seem to suggest that the incidence of low-level anti-social behaviour, including graffiti and vandalism, is increasing.

What we at the committee would like to do is to mobilise the community to report incidents in a timely manner following the procedures outlined by Police an City Watch, in other words, we would like to make the statistics work in our favour.

The attached letter was delivered to residents in areas designated as "hot spots" for anti-social behaviour, particularly around McCusker Park. The committee encourages all residents to read this document and consider it's content. Please contact the committee of you have any further comments or concerns or would like to get involved in assisting us to address this issue. Only a concerted community effort will put the lid on such behaviour before it spirals out of control.

3rd March 2007: Calling all basketball fans

The Wanneroo Wolves Basketball Club is holding a special fund-raising event on Saturday 10th March at the Wolves stadium in Joondalup. The event is being held to raise funds to send the Wolves under 14 Boys Team to Townsville QLD to compete in the National u14's Tournament in October.

This team of boys, which includes Iluka residents, has been virtually undefeated in 2 years, winning the 2006 WABL league title along with various championship tournaments along the way. Such is their strength that 5 of the team represented Western Australia in the 2006 State Schoolboys tournament.

The Event kicks of at 6:00 PM with a match between the Wanneroo and Stirling under 14 teams, (Stirling being WA's other representative at the tournament) followed by a Past vs Present SBL match at 8:00 PM. There will also be door prizes raffles with entry being only $10 for Adults and $5 for Children.

8th February 2007: Alternative Cable Television Provision

For over a decade (that I am aware of), residents of Iluka have experienced the frustration of not being able to connect to cable TV without the installation of a satellite dish. This is despite the suburb being equipped with private cable infrastructure and the Foxtel cable being available in neighbouring suburbs.

Perhaps a solution has arrived with the emergence of budget satellite TV operator 'SelectTV'. As a privately owned pragmatic business I am sure they would leap at the opportunity to provide a satellite feed into the Iluka cable network and thus have 1000 homes instantly available as potential new subscribers. Homeowners would merely require a set top box or subscriber card in order to decode the signal, and would not need to install satellite dishes.

As an added bonus, SelecTV costs only $29 per month per household.

I would like to request that the Homeowners Association and/or E-wire approach SelectTV to investigate whether such an option could be made available for the Iluka homeowners.

Mark Ashworth

From the Committee
E-wire are in fact trialling provision of SelectTV in nearby Somerly. Apparently is it possible that SelectTV could be supplied to Iluka in the near future but as yet there is no confirmed date as to when this is likely to happen.

We suggest that interested residents contact the committee to register interest, with enough support it may be possible for e-wire to consider introducing a trial earlier than anticipated.
