2nd February 2005: Beach Access
We have received a number of enquiries from residents as to the reasons for the closure of the
beach access from the foreshore park. We have received the following reply from Joondalup council.
| |
The City received advice that a resident had been injured at the base of the steps due to erosion of the sand. Inspection on 15 November 2004, confirmed there was a hazard due to high tidal erosion of sand. Access was closed until sand build up occurred naturally as access is difficult.
The pathway was reopened 18 January 2005. It is proposed that additional concrete be placed over the rocky base during the next erosion cycle in March. The erosion cycle has occurred previously without closure but on this occasion a report was received and this increased the City's liability to a claim.
When a hazard is identified and reported, the City is legally bound to undertake remedial action and this often involves closure of the area. There are various pathways where closure occurs seasonally due to beach erosion.
|
We notice however that as of the weekend of the 29th and 30th of January the
barrier was still in place, so we can only assume that nature has not yet taken it's course. We have
suggested that a more informative notice be put in place and we hope this will happen soon.
We would like to remind residents that should you ignore the barrier and use the access path,
you do so at your own risk.
